In an article published on August 5th on washingtonpost.com by authors Brady Dennis and Andrew Freedman, U.N. Secretary General António Guterres is quoted as saying “We have always lived through hot summers. But this is not the summer of our youth. This is not your grandfather’s summer.”

Further in the article, Guterres is once again quoted, saying: “This year alone, we have seen temperature records shattered from New Delhi to Anchorage, from Paris to Santiago, from Adelaide and to the Arctic Circle. If we do not take action on climate change now, these extreme weather events are just the tip of the iceberg. And, indeed, the iceberg is also rapidly melting.”

Wherever one stands on hot-button topics such as climate change and global warming, it is impossible to deny that the Earth’s weather has not changed dramatically over the past few years. (At the time of writing, Toronto, Canada’s weather forecast shows low to mid-20 degree Celsius weather for the remainder of September, not to mention Sunday, September 22nd saw 30+ degree weather.) With that said, this article is an interesting read and does an excellent job of validating the need for a global effort to protect the Planet’s climate.

“July has rewritten climate history, with dozens of new temperature records at [the] local, national and global level. This is not science fiction. It is the reality of climate change. It is happening now, and it will worsen in the future without urgent climate action.” -Petteri Taalas, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization
